The Story Behind the Songs
Gail has been singing all her life; in musicals as a child, and daily with her brother, an accomplished pianist. She attended LaGuardia HS, (Music & Art), and sang in hotels and clubs on both coasts during and after college. Gail trained in Belle Canto singing with Joyce Hall, and in song performance with the late and great Broadway conductor, Jack Lee. She also trained as an actor and dancer and earned a graduate degree in writing. She taught writing at NYU for many years; Gail has written songs, plays, poems and several books, (including Find Your Voice, Heinemann Press), and she worked as an SSDC director for twenty years. Her original musical, Building—developed with the first ever Drama League grant for New Work—was presented at Lincoln Center, and featured Daphne Rubin-Vega. Gail also trained and still works as a Narrative Coach/Therapist, helping others to find their own voices; a documentary film was made about her work and aired on PBS. In all her pursuits she has emphasized the sharing of story, and is fond of saying: “Don’t let the words just go by!” She returned to her first career, singing, in the last decade, and began working with her current musical partner, two-time MAC award-winning pianist/composer, (also singer/harmonist!), Gerry Dieffenbach. They have recorded 9 albums together, (along with some other amazing musicians), under the keen producing eye of Paul Rolnick, (Zevely Records), mastered by Grammy Award-winning Alan Silverman of ARF Digital. Gail is currently preparing to record an album of all original songs, arranged with the assistance of her long-time brilliant colleague, Broadway arranger, Ned Paul Ginsburg. She is grateful for her ‘dream team’, most especially her sons, Geordy and Jesse, who design her album art, and manage her Indie label, respectively.
